In January 2024 I had the chance to offer and share SRT in the context of Landscapes for Compositions, envisioned and organised by Priscilla Pizziol and Corpoetica in Italy. It was an intensive week with 6 hours of workshop every day, including SRT and Instant Composition.
The Intensive took place at Gaia Terra in Italy, an eco-village in the country side at about a one hour train ride away from Venice. A small community that tunes into sustainable ways of living together, with each other and with Gaia Terra, Mother Earth. I don’t think i’ve every before been in a place so radical and so non-dogmatic simultaneously, so inclusive and existing as an invitation. Truly inspiring. I imagine Joan would have loved this place and its people very much. It reminded me of her home on Vashon island and also of the retreat centre on the island where we had spent part of our Teacher Training. The woman who initiated it all, Debora, is a dancer and the beautiful dance studio is at the heart of the place. We were working with a group of 26 dedicated dance artists.
At the end of this week, I adopted a tree that will be planted on the land of Gaia Terra. It will be dedicated to and have the name of Joan, for Joan Skinner. It will be a tree to help thicken the forestry near the river Stella. Other trees being planted are fruit trees. I love that Joan’s tree comes out of practicing, playing, dancing SRT in the midst of this quiet, lively visionary place in nature, a dynamic stillness. May this place with Joan’s tree be as visionary and sustainable as Joan’s legacy.
