Artistic concept and development of content and design: Eva Karczag, Bettina Neuhaus
Since 2015, Independent Dance Artists Eva Karczag and Bettina Neuhaus have been presenting and continuously developing, in various contexts and formats, the live version of their lecture performance, Along the Lines.
During the lecture, material is shown as a 3-dimensional spatial map of artists (including Steve Paxton, Simone Forti, Trisha Brown, Deborah Hay); methodologies (such as Skinner Releasing / Anatomical Release Technique, Body-Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, Taiji, Aikido and Yoga); concepts (for instance Listening, Collaboration, Language, Improvisation and the Unknown) and personal experiences.
The audience is both guided through, and can explore for themselves, the richness and diversity of this small, yet fertile area of dance. Together, artists and audience can trace some of the complex interconnected relationships that exist within post-Judson dance.
In August 2022 Karczag and Neuhaus launched www.alongthelines.net, a bilingual web version of the live lecture/performance.
The aim of the web version is to make accessible to a larger audience some of these concepts and relationships. It can give a taste of the way knowledge and skills are transmitted between generations of individual teachers and colleagues, and among various methods and schools.
The experience of exploring the site can be seen as analogous to being physically present in the space and time of the live version, offering similar possibilities of following both predetermined routes through the material, as well as journeys determined by the visitor’s own interests. The latter would more closely reflect the nature of the connections that are at the core of the way these relationships exist in reality.
